Keith Miller, the director of Keith Miller & Associates Counseling in Dupont Circle and Bethesda, launched a Kickstarter campaign in October to raise funds for publishing his new book aimed at curbing divorce. His witty video (found on the campaign page) depicts how many couples feel about going to couples therapy and makes an appeal to pre-order his book via Kickstarter as a way to finance the expenses of publishing and distributing his message nationwide. The video was filmed at the Metro Immediate & Primary Care office in Silver Spring.
A few years ago, Miller found himself to be an unwitting guinea pig of the same kind of medicine he normally dispenses to couples. Married for twelve years with two young children, he and his wife tumbled into a major marriage crisis and were nearly divorced. In his book, Love Under Repair: How to Save Your Marriage and Survive Couples Therapy, Miller reveals his own difficulties as he weaves together the story of how his marriage was saved by finding the right kind of marriage specialist. Stunned by the lack of uniformity in the way couples therapy is advertised and delivered, he set out to create a manual for anyone following in his footsteps, seeking clarity about how to separate experienced and effective couples therapy from other choices.
The book contains dozens of tips to take the guesswork and stress out of the inherently nerve-wracking task of finding a good couples therapist. Miller shares a veteran therapist’s view on such topics as:
- What are the three most popular brands of couples therapy
- How to shop for the right therapist for your situation
- How much couples therapy really costs
- How to use health insurance for couples therapy
- Three alternatives to couples therapy
- What to ask a therapist before you begin therapy
As of November 12th, Miller only has 6 days left on the Kickstarter clock to meet his funding goal or he won’t receive a dime from the thousands of dollars already pledged by backers of his project.
